Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan requires a whopping Rs. 100 crores!

Ace director Mani Ratnam's proposed Tamil-Telugu bilingual period drama (titled Ponniyin Selvan in Tamil and tentatively titled Veerudu in Telugu), starring Mahesh Babu and Tamil heroes Vijay, Arya and Anushka, has been reportedly shelved.

According to sources, the film has been put on hold due problems in finding the funds. The film requires a whopping Rs. 100 crores, it is said.

After the financial failure of Raavan (Raavanan in Tamil), which was also made with a huge budget, corporate houses are showing no interest in spending huge amounts on a risky subject like Ponniyin Selvan, it is heard.

At a stage when all the actors and actresses were said to be finalized, this comes as surprise to many. Also director Mani Ratnam went on a tour recently to scout for locations to shoot this trilingual.

Vijay and Mahesh Babu were roped in to play the male leads while Anushka and Priyanka Chopra were touted to be their onscreen pairs, it may be recalled. Let’s wait for an official announcement on this project.

Vijay will play the courageous warrior Vallavarayan Vandiyatheyan and Mahesh Babu will play king Aditha Karikalan. Arya will be Arulmozhi Varman in this film, which has Anushka as Mahesh Babu’s younger sister and Vijay’s love interest. Now the latest buzz is that the director has approached Bollywood diva Priyanka Chopra to play a prominent role in the film.

'Ponniyin Selvan' is widely regarded as the greatest novel ever written in Tamil. It deals with the fortunes of the Chola empire during the 10th century. Tollywood heartthrob Mahesh Babu is hitting the headlines often after associating himself with Mani Ratnam's 'Ponniyin Selvan'. The mega budget multi starrer flick is in the race with Rajinikanth's 'Rana' for letting out news frequently.

Mahesh Babu is taking all possible efforts from going shirtless to consuming drugs, but the actor is said to have been irked by a decision made by Mani Ratnam. As per the reports Mani Ratnam has roped in Anushka for casting her as Mahesh Babu's pair.
